Introduction to the Hire and Rental Industry
This free e-learning course is available exclusively to HAE EHA members and provides a comprehensive introduction to the hire and rental sector. Members can also receive a training pack, enabling them to deliver the course in person if preferred, making it a flexible and accessible option for onboarding new staff.
Product Familiarisation New Starter Training – Hire Desk & Workshop
This introductory course is designed for new entrants to the hire and rental industry, offering a practical overview of key products and safety essentials. Learners will gain familiarity with a range of equipment including power tools, LPG heating and cooling units, heavy machinery, and plant equipment. The training also covers core topics such as health and safety and portable appliance testing, helping new staff build confidence and competence in both hire desk and workshop environments.
Hire Desk Controller New Entrant Training Programme
This programme is aimed at workers in the role of Hire Desk Operative or Hire Controller. Delegates attend a 5-week modular training programme, an on-site assessment, and are awarded a Level 2 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). The training focusses on sales and customer service techniques, as well as practical sessions on safe use and awareness on a wide range of tools and equipment.
Mental Health First Aider
This two-day course qualifies you as a certified Mental Health First Aider, giving you the skills to recognise signs of mental ill health, support people in crisis (including those experiencing suicidal thoughts), and encourage appropriate professional help. You’ll also explore key mental health conditions, stigma, effective communication, and how to look after your own wellbeing.
Mental Health Awareness
In this half-day introduction, you’ll gain a foundational understanding of mental health, explore common conditions like anxiety and depression, and learn how to challenge stigma. The course also covers how to spot early signs of distress and how to start supportive conversations.
Mental Health First Aid Champion
This one-day course prepares you to take a proactive role in promoting mental wellbeing in your workplace. You’ll learn about common mental health issues, how to spot the signs of distress, support colleagues effectively, encourage help-seeking, and contribute to a positive mental health culture.
Mental Health Refresher
Ideal for existing Mental Health First Aiders and Champions, this half-day course reinforces core knowledge, refreshes your practical skills, and provides updates on the latest research and best practices. It also helps rebuild confidence in using mental health action plans and maintaining healthy boundaries.
Suicide First Aid
This course provides a practical, evidence-based approach to suicide prevention. You’ll learn to identify warning signs, explore how to have open, compassionate conversations about suicide, develop safety plans, and refer individuals to appropriate support, all within a safe and supportive learning environment.
Mental Health Skills for Managers
Designed for those in leadership roles, this course helps managers confidently support their teams’ mental health. It covers identifying early warning signs, conducting wellbeing check-ins, managing mental health-related absence, and fostering a psychologically safe and productive workplace.
5 Day Management & Leadership Programme
This 5-day training programme is available to all HAE EHA members and is ideal for both new and experienced hire centre managers. It equips delegates with the practical skills and knowledge needed to manage operations efficiently and effectively. Courses are run regularly, throughout the year at various locations across the UK.
IOSH Executive Directors
This strategic-level course is designed for senior leaders and board members who influence health and safety at an organisational level. It highlights the moral, legal, and financial implications of health and safety responsibilities and helps directors understand how strong leadership can drive a positive safety culture across the business.
IOSH Managing Safely
IOSH Managing Safely is a practical and engaging course designed for managers and supervisors in any industry. It provides the knowledge and tools needed to manage health and safety effectively within their teams. The course covers risk assessment, accident investigation, and legal responsibilities, promoting a proactive approach to workplace safety.
IOSH Managing Safely Refresher
This one-day refresher course is for those who have previously completed IOSH Managing Safely. It reinforces key concepts, updates learners on any legislative changes, and strengthens their ability to manage risks and improve safety performance within their teams.
Hand Arm Vibration (HAVs) Workshop
This workshop raises awareness of the health risks associated with Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVs) and the legal responsibilities surrounding its management. Learners will explore how to assess and control vibration exposure, understand relevant legislation, and apply practical measures to reduce or eliminate risks, especially when hiring out equipment.
Health and Safety in Equipment Hire (Awareness)
This course provides an essential overview of health and safety responsibilities within the equipment hire industry. Learners will gain an understanding of key systems, policies, and legal duties, including the safe use of work equipment, protective measures, workshop standards, and proper documentation. It’s ideal for promoting compliance and best practice in hire operations.
IOSH Working Safely
IOSH Working Safely is a one-day course aimed at all employees, regardless of role or industry. It offers a clear and engaging introduction to workplace health and safety, focusing on practical actions to reduce risk. This course is perfect for promoting a strong safety culture and ensuring everyone understands their responsibilities at work.
NEBOSH General Certificate
The NEBOSH National General Certificate is one of the UK’s most widely recognised health and safety qualifications. Ideal for managers, supervisors, and anyone responsible for health and safety in the workplace, this course provides a solid foundation in risk management and legal responsibilities. It’s designed to help create safer working environments across all industry sectors.
CITB – Health and Safety Awareness
CITB Health and Safety Awareness is a one-day training course designed for those new to the construction industry. It provides a practical understanding of health, safety, and environmental issues to help individuals work safely on site. This course is a key step toward obtaining a CSCS Labourer (Green) Card, making it ideal for anyone starting a career in construction.
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
This course provides essential knowledge on how to identify, assess, and control hazardous substances in the workplace. Learners will understand the legal requirements under COSHH regulations and how to implement effective safety measures to reduce health risks from chemicals and other dangerous substances.
Fire Marshall
Designed for those responsible for fire safety in the workplace, this course covers fire prevention, emergency procedures, and the correct use of fire extinguishers. Learners will gain the confidence and knowledge to act as a competent Fire Marshal, ensuring a safe and compliant working environment.
First Aid at Work
This comprehensive three-day course equips learners with the skills and confidence to manage a range of workplace first aid situations. Covering everything from minor injuries to life-threatening emergencies, it meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and is ideal for designated workplace first aiders.
Emergency First Aid at Work
A one-day course designed for individuals who need to provide initial care in emergency situations. Learners will cover the basics of first aid, including CPR, managing an unconscious casualty, and treating minor injuries. This course is perfect for low-risk workplaces and supports compliance with HSE guidance.
Manual Handling
This practical course helps learners understand how to lift, carry, and move objects safely to reduce the risk of injury. It covers key manual handling techniques, risk assessments, and the legal responsibilities of both employers and employees, promoting a safer working environment for all.
Working at Height
Focused on reducing the risks associated with working at height, this course covers the correct use of ladders, platforms, and safety equipment. Learners will understand their responsibilities under the Work at Height Regulations and how to implement effective control measures to prevent falls and injuries.
Safe Storage, Handling and Transporting of LPG
TThis course provides essential knowledge for anyone working with LPG. It covers legal responsibilities, how to carry out risk assessments, and the properties and types of LPG. Learners will gain an understanding of correct storage and transportation procedures, the components of LPG containers, and how to respond effectively in an emergency—including when carrying mixed loads or other dangerous goods.
LPG Gases Safety e-learning
This is an interactive & engaging e-Learning training course covering the safe use, handling, storage and transportation of LPG gases used in all applications. In addition to compliance, completion of this course should result in the safe use of LPG equipment and gives staff information to understand the specific hazards associated with the gases in use, this training ensures your organisation complies with obligations to train all staff exposed to risk; resulting in an assured workforce and a safer workplace.
Maintenance of Heating & Drying Equipment including LPG
This course provides a practical overview of the maintenance and application of heating, cooling, and drying equipment commonly used in hire operations. Learners will explore the principles of heat transfer, humidity control, and temperature regulation, along with how to determine the correct type and number of units needed for different environments. The course also covers fuel types (LPG, diesel, kerosene, and electric), equipment selection, power supply requirements, and inspection and testing procedures.
Electrical (PAT) Training
ServiceTech is designed for individuals starting out or progressing in the hire industry, particularly those in Check & Test or Test & Run roles. It’s also ideal for existing Service Technicians looking to enhance their skills and gain a formal qualification. The training covers key areas such as basic electrical theory, PAT testing procedures, safe use of test equipment, and common electrical repairs.
Hire of Abrasive Wheels
This explains the Abrasive Wheels regulations and the hire of this equipment under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations. It will focus training on all aspects of correct hire procedures, basic maintenance, service inspections, pre and off hire checks, recording requirements and the correct mounting, setting and use of Abrasive Wheels.
Battery Care & Maintenance
Proper care and maintenance of traction and power batteries are essential to maximize their lifespan, efficiency, and safety. Given that the cost of a typical forklift battery can be a third of the truck’s purchase price, protecting this investment is crucial. This training covers best practices to ensure batteries perform reliably for up to 20 years, while also highlighting safety precautions to protect operators from hazards such as battery acid and electrical risks.
Cable Avoiding Tool CAT & Genny Operation
This course trains operatives in the correct operation of the Cable Avoiding Tool (CAT) and Signal Generator (Genny). The equipment is used to locate underground cables and services. The equipment should not be used by operators without proper training.
Confined Space Awareness
This course is essential for anyone who manages or controls work in a confined space. The course is classroom based, and does not involve a practical assessment. Please note that this course does NOT qualify delegates to physically enter a confined space.
ServiceTech
ServiceTech is a modular training programme designed for new starters and those advancing in hire businesses, particularly for Check & Test and Test & Run roles. It also supports experienced Service Technicians seeking formal training to enhance their skills. The programme covers a wide range of essential topics through 12 modules, including electrical and mechanical equipment, small plant, powered access, health and safety (IOSH Working Safely), materials hoists, road-tow and traffic management equipment, generators, welding, and climate control, equipping learners with the knowledge to maintain and service hire equipment safely and effectively.
Forklift Operator
This course provides essential instruction on safely operating the counterbalance lift truck—commonly known as a frontloader, stacker, or forklift. As the most widely used vehicle in materials handling, mastering this equipment is key for efficient and safe workplace operations.
Lift Truck Training – Telehandler
This course covers safe operation of the Industrial Telescopic Rough Terrain lift truck, also known as a JCB Handler, Mini Tele, or Telescopic. Designed as a compact version of construction telescopics, this versatile machine is ideal for industrial environments, offering enhanced reach and manoeuvrability.
Plant Mover
This training is ideal for those who don’t typically operate plant but need to move it safely around the yard, load it onto vehicles, and manage deliveries. This course covers essential knowledge of plant equipment, safety checks, correct use of PPE, and safe loading, unloading, and transportation procedures to ensure efficient and compliant plant movement.
Slinger / Banksman / Signaller
This essential course trains delegates in safely directing and guiding plant and vehicle movements on site. Learners will develop the skills to communicate effectively using hand signals and radios, understand their responsibilities for load control, and ensure safe slinging and signaling practices to prevent accidents during lifting and moving operations.
