News Item: Construction Industry Leaders Launch “Silica Hub” to Tackle Respiratory Health Challenges

The Health in Construction Leadership Group (HCLG) Respiratory Risk Working Group, in collaboration with the Construction Dust Partnership (CDP), is proud to announce the launch of the Silica Hub. This dedicated digital resource, hosted on the HCLG website, is designed to simplify the management of Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) and protect workers across the sector.

The initiative began 12 months ago when the HCLG Respiratory Working Group joined forces with the CDP. Operating under the mantra “Together Everyone Achieves More” (TEAM), the group set out to tackle the industry’s most significant respiratory threat: silica dust.

As active members of the working group, Hire Association Europe (HAE) played a vital role in ensuring that the hub provides practical, actionable guidance that reflects the realities of equipment hire and on-site tool usage.

The RACE Strategy

Recognising that existing silica information can often be daunting, the working group curated vast resources into a streamlined, four-pillar framework known as the ‘RACE’ strategy:

  • Risk Assessment
  • Awareness
  • Control
  • Evaluate
  • Tailored Responsibility

To ensure the information reaches the right people in the right way, the Silica Hub categorises resources into three clear levels of responsibility:

  • Directors & Senior Leadership: Strategic oversight and legal obligations
  • Managers & Team Leaders: Practical implementation and site supervision
  • Employees: On-the-ground safety and personal protection
  • “We weren’t looking to reinvent the wheel,” said a spokesperson for the working group. We simply wanted to make the information less daunting and more accessible to everyone from the boardroom to the boots on the ground on site.

The industry is encouraged to visit the new Silica Hub today to explore the RACE strategy and download the latest resources to help eliminate silica-related lung disease.
