Environmental responsibility can no longer be pushed down the priority list for suppliers in the hire industry. Customers, regulators and supply chains increasingly require higher standards not only in safety and quality, but also in sustainability, making it a clear expectation.

At HAE EHA, we work closely with our members and partners to ensure sustainability is at the forefront of business strategy with the SafeHire Certfication Scheme.

To explore this further, I spoke with Carl Bartlett, Director of Certification Services, about how SafeHire supports members in embedding environmental responsibility into everyday operations and why safety provides the foundation for sustainable hire.

When we talk about sustainability in hire, where does safety fit in?

Carl advised that in the modern rental landscape, we often treat sustainability and safety as parallel tracks, but the reality is they are deeply symbiotic. Safety isn’t just a compliance box we tick; it is the operational foundation upon which any credible sustainability strategy is built.

True sustainability is rooted in resource optimisation. When we commit to structured maintenance schedules and pre-hire inspections, we aren’t just ensuring a machine is safe for the operator, we are ensuring it runs at peak performance and efficiency, minimising carbon emissions and preventing the premature failure of assets. A safe, well-governed site is inherently a low-waste environment.

By investing in comprehensive staff training and robust process controls, we mitigate the risk of catastrophic failures that lead to environmental contamination or equipment scrappage. From acquisition to decommissioning, a safe asset is a sustainable one. In this industry, if you aren’t operating safely, you aren’t operating sustainably.

By encouraging consistent, responsible ways of working, SafeHire promotes sustainability. Safety practices are embedded into daily operations, creating a strong foundation for environmental responsibility. Reducing accidents also reduces damage, downtime and unnecessary use of resources, all of which have environmental implications.

So SafeHire is not just a safety standard. It also supports environmental performance?

Yes, it does. One of the key elements of SafeHire is environmental management, which is what makes it so effective for our members. It considers how businesses manage waste, control emissions, and improve environmental efficiency over time.

What makes SafeHire effective is that it integrates these elements. Environmental responsibility isn’t treated separately; it forms part of a wider approach that includes training, risk management and operational control.

Our certified members achieve sustainability through consistent and well-managed processes across the entire hire business, rather than through one-off objectives.

How does the SafeHire audit process help drive these improvements?

The audit process is central to this. SafeHire involves an independent, third-party assessment that examines how a business operates in practice rather than relying solely on documented policies.

The auditors review areas such as equipment inspection, maintenance, environmental impact and risk management. Importantly, it is not a simple checklist of existing procedures, they also identify opportunities for improvement. This may include reducing waste, improving fleet efficiency or strengthening environmental controls.

Over time, this approach to continuous improvement helps hire organisations reduce their environmental footprint, supporting their sustainability goals, while also improving safety and operational efficiency.

ESG is becoming increasingly important. How does SafeHire help members meet these expectations?

SafeHire provides a practical framework for ESG, particularly in relation to environmental and social responsibilities. It brings together key areas such as health and safety, environmental management and corporate responsibility within one recognised standard.

For many hire companies, ESG requirements can appear complex. But increasingly more end-users are looking for sustainable tool and plant hire solutions, and in 2024, research found that 70% of construction projects incorporated some form of sustainability targets.

SafeHire simplifies the process by providing a structured approach to demonstrating responsible operations. It also offers independent verification, which helps build trust with customers and stakeholders.

What does this mean for members working towards sustainability goals?

SafeHire provides clarity by supporting members in taking measurable action to improve their business’ standards. According to a 2024 Sustainable Futures Report from NBS, 53% of construction companies in UK had adopted carbon offsetting strategies, up from 38% in 2021, highlighting the importance of showcasing sustainable solutions when hire organisations are tendering for clients in this sector.

So, whether the goal is to reduce carbon emissions, improve waste management or enhance efficiency, the Certification enables consistent progress. Because it aligns with recognised standards and industry best practice, it also helps members remain ahead of regulatory requirements and customer expectations.

Increasingly, procurement processes and supply chains prioritise sustainability, providing a clear commercial advantage. SafeHire Certification demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to both safety and environmental responsibility.

Finally, what advice would you give to hire companies looking to strengthen their environmental credentials?

Businesses should focus on safety, training and robust processes, as these underpin long-term sustainability. Our SafeHire Certification combines these factors together to create an understandable, clear progression strategy which is practical and relevant to the hire industry.

SafeHire is not about implementing everything immediately. It’s about continuous improvement, making steady changes that collectively deliver significant benefits for both the business and the environment.
