Following the HSE's publication of Safety Bulletin No: EPD02-2023 in May 2023 it has come to attention that there have been further instances relating to LPG Forklift Trucks.
This bulletin focusses LPG Forklift Truck Fire Risk following a number of fire incidents related to the build-up of deposits in fuel systems, in particular the vaporiser units of LPG powered vehicles.
These deposits can prevent the truck from starting, and often occur as a result of cold temperatures. Further build-up can cause valves to jam resulting in a mix being supplied to the engine that's too rich to ignite.
However, continued attempts to start the forklift can cause unburned LPG to be released. In extreme cases the gas can ignite causing the vehicle to catch fire, leading to the risk of serious injury and damage to the immediate area.
Prior to this, in November 2022, the UK Material Handling Association published a Safety Alert regarding the issue. The document can be accessed here.
