News Item: Fast Track NVQ Pilot Successfully Launched with ServiceTech

In March the Hire Association supported the delivery of a pilot fast track route to hire-specific NVQs. The programme was delivered to ten equipment engineers, eight learners achieving a Level 2 NVQ in Plant Maintenance and two learners achieving Level 3 in Thorough Examination.

The programme included eight ServiceTech courses covering equipment including: Electrical, Engines, Hydraulic, Non-Mechanical, Powered Access, Low-Level Access, Materials Hoists and general Health & Safety, along with their qualifications, and this all helps gain IPAF Competent Assessed Person (CAP) Points.

The programme was delivered as two one-week blocks over five to six weeks, giving time to complete training, knowledge elements of the NVQ and sufficient work based evidence to cross-reference to the learners’ portfolios.

The fast track pilot is a great way to spend dedicated time gathering the knowledge elements of the NVQ. While the work based evidence can be gathered on-the-job, the biggest delay to NVQ completion is the time needed to complete the knowledge criteria. Learners complete in the region of 100 technical questions for a Level 2 NVQ in Plant Maintenance.

The cost of this programme is £4,000 plus VAT including full board and accommodation. However, for organisations that are CITB registered and eligible we are able to apply the CITB Employer Network funding, reducing this to £1,250 plus VAT to cover the cost of the NVQ.

The next two blocks have been released with limited places available. Upon booking the learner will be profiled to ensure they are completing the correct qualification for their job role.

One week is spent in training, then a period back at work (4 weeks or less) to gather work based evidence, followed by a further week back at the Penybont training centre.

At half a point per course, the training is worth up to 4 points towards a learners IPAF CAP Certification. The Level 2 NVQ in Plant Maintenance is worth a further 2 points and the Level 3 Thorough Examination is worth 4 points.

Once this training is complete learners will also need proof of manufacturer led training and industry experience before booking onto a CAP course with an accredited provider.

This programme is also ideal for Test and Run / Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) Technicians as well as self-taught experienced engineers who missed out on formal apprenticeships, and would benefit from formal qualifications whether they are progressing to IPAF CAP status or not.

For delegates that wish to undertake the training without the NVQ there is an open ServiceTech course running as follows:
