Fleet consultancy and advisory service Puddy Vehicle Solutions (PVS) won the New Business of the Year title in the 2016 Somerset Business Awards after identifying how clients could make savings totalling more than £64 million.
Launched 14 months ago by Marcus Puddy, one of the UK’s most experienced fleet professionals, PVS provides a cradle to grave advisory and management service to businesses operating company cars and vans and a consultancy to contract hire and leasing companies, manufacturers and dealers.
The Awards, organised by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce, are in their 12th year and are designed to celebrate business success across the county, raise the profile of locally-based businesses both regionally and nationally and encourage growth within start-up organisations.
One of the judges, Duncan Sykes, from Award sponsor and premier regional law firm Foot Anstey said: “We were impressed with the speed of progress that PVS has made in such a short period of time. The speed with which it has grown from infancy to working with such a stand out client list was impressive. PVS is a testimony to the great bedrock of business there is in the region. It was great to see the top talent of all of our three finalists; how far advanced and progressed they are is a true testament to their workforce.”
On winning the Award, Mr Puddy, who launched the business with his wife, Louise, said: “PVS has gone from strength-to-strength winning contracts with organisations across the UK. We have worked with numerous businesses highlighting where cost reductions and service improvements can be made.
“PVS in its first year of trading provided services for some 15 companies, eight of which were large blue chip organisations. We have worked to enhance the commercial proposition of those companies having identified cost savings collectively totalling more than £64 million.
“It’s remarkable to have achieved so much as PVS was only launched in August 2015. The Award is a great accolade to receive.
“PVS is at the cutting-edge of fleet strategy. The company’s continuing growth is based on innovative thinking by providing unique and professional services to major organisations.
“Effective fleet management solutions positively affect the environment through efficiency gains. The savings identified by PVS for its customer base are substantial equating to many millions of pounds making UK commerce stronger and more competitive. The result is lower operational costs for organisations which could be reflected in lower service costs to the public at large.”
What’s more, PVS has diversified with the launch, due to customer demand, of PVS Vehicle Logistics, which provides fleet logistical services to end-user fleets and contract hire and leasing companies.
Mr Puddy anticipates that Burnham on Sea-based PVS will recruit additional staff in 2016/17 - its second year of trading - as it continues to expand its customer base.
Clients include Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), which operates a 7,500-strong fleet, and group fleet manager Paul Groundwell said: “We appointed PVS as a long-term consultant in support of our heavy re-tendering period relating to our car and operational vehicle fleet. One of the key drivers leading to our engagement with Marcus was his financial awareness and fiscal analysis skills. Not only has this helped reduce the overall timescale of these major procurement exercises, he has also guided SSE towards significant cost saving reductions which total in excess of £20 million over the next five years.”
Mr Puddy’s responsibilities during a 25-year business career prior to launching PVS included managing the 6,600-strong Lloyds TSB Bank company car fleet along with its 6,000 grey fleet drivers and, latterly being commercial vehicle director at Lex Autolease, the UK’s largest contract hire and leasing company.
He launched PVS promising fleet consultancy with a difference as he extended the range of services offered to include recommendation implementation, in-life management and fleet decision-maker training.
Furthermore, PVS works with fleet service providers, such as contract hire and leasing companies, delivering a number of solutions from interim roles through to consultancy days supporting an organisation’s desire to grow, work on retention, procurement and selling services to different parts of the UK economy from large corporates to SMEs and brokers.
PVS also targets motor manufacturers and dealer groups to help them and their staff better understand fleet sector requirements to improve new car sale conversion rates.
