Following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement that he will stand down as Conservative Party Leader a leadership contest is underway. A daily ballot of Tory MPs will eliminate candidates down to a final two who will then face the wider party membership for a final vote.
The result of the contest will be known on the 5th September and it is anticipated that a new Prime Minister will take office the following day.
In the meantime Mr Johnson has announced an interim government to fill the vacancies resulting from over 50 recent ministerial and aide resignations. Some of the ministers who resigned have been reappointed, but not all. The list of ministers can be found here.
A new Prime Minister might decide to recast the shape of Whitehall or retain the current number of departments, Cabinet portfolios and roles, this will be revealed in September. Parliament will be in recess from 21st July until 5th September.
