News Item: Music Event Without Social Distancing Could Point the Way to Industry Reboot
Primavera Sound, one of Europe’s most popular music festivals, collaborated with medical officials to trial a live event last month (December 2020), without social distancing.
The participants involved in this trial event were tested throughout the week, including rapid PCR and antigen tests before entering the venue. Organisers wanted the event to achieve the feeling of normality and safety, with guests allowed to dance, drink and mingle, whilst also adhering to safety guidelines. The safety procedures in place included; obligatory face masks, hand sanitisation, a one-way system, and proper ventilation.
All the people involved in the live event weren’t guaranteed entry. On the day of the event, all participants, who tested negative, were divided into two groups, one group entered the concert, the other did not. Randomising attendees enabled scientists to set up a full clinical trial.
This trial demonstrated the viability of live events like this, if the correct safety procedures are in place. This event could point the way forward for rapid testing to reboot the industry, without having to wait for the full vaccine rollout.
