News Item: HAE EHA Technical Health and Safety Group Focus on New Guidance

The Technical, Health & Safety Group, involving representatives from hire companies and support from the Health and Safety Executive, met on Thursday 19th May.

The group focuses on creating new guidance documents, updating technical health & safety bulletins to benefit the industry and end-users.

The most recent guidance is Vehicle Load Safety in the Hire Industry and is now available for association members to view and download. The new guidance document is for hire managers, business owners and equipment operators, and offers a practical route to implement safe operating procedures when moving equipment on vehicles.

The need for new guidance comes after member feedback on widely reported issues. These include:

  • falls on or from vehicles
  • unsuitable or faulty restraint systems
  • unsafe or missing access points, steps and/or hand holds
  • unsafe ancillary equipment i.e. tail-lifts, winches and cranes
  • crush injuries between vehicles, plant, and loads
  • overturning/toppling of items during loading/unloading
  • insecure and unsafe loads
  • lifting and manual handling injuries
  • slips and trips on or around vehicles

The document covers everything from initial quality and safety checks, general load securing principles, load restraints and applicable BSi standards, and includes links to videos, resources, and additional guidance from agencies including The Driver Vehicle Standards Agence (DVSA) and The Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

The guidance on Vehicle Load Safety in the Hire Industry can be viewed or downloaded from the HAE EHA members area, in the 'Codes of Practice' drop-down. Your member username and password will be required.
