News Item: Event Professionals Gather Outside Parliament for Silent Protest
On Tuesday 29th September, thousands of event industry affiliates gathered outside Parliament as part of the #WeMakeEvents and 'Red Alert' campaigns to protest against the lack of support provided by the government, whilst also raising awareness to the crisis the industry currently faces.
Those who work in events assembled at 12:30pm in Parliament Square and College Green. Protesters wore red as part of the 'Red Alert' protests and at 12:50pm they turned away from Parliament to symbolise the government turning their backs on the industry during the pandemic.
Many carried signs expressing the difficulties the industry faces, including unemployment (with many not eligible for government financial support) and called for further targeted action with the furlough scheme coming to a close at the end of October.
With large scale events highlighted by the Prime Minister as being unsafe and therefore unable to go ahead, the protesters stood in ordered, socially distanced rows to demonstrate that the events sector can safely bring groups together, similar to the hospitality industry.
