News Item: Business Events Capacity Increases to 4,000 from December

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced, when England's national lockdown ends on the 2nd December, business events will be allowed to continue in areas with Tier 1 and Tier 2 restrictions.

Mr Johnson addressed the House of Commons on the 23rd November saying, "In tiers one and two, spectator sports and business events will be able to resume indoors and outside with capacity limits and social distancing, providing more consistency with performances in theatres and concert halls." This will resolve a number of inconsistencies such as business events allowed a maximum of 30 people while theatre shows far exceeded this limit.

With the Prime Minister's assurance that "change is on the way", the new Winter Plan outlines that business events, live performances and sporting events, may run at the following capacities:

  • Tier 1 - 50% capacity or 4,000 people outdoors and 1,000 people indoors, whichever is the lowest
  • Tier 2 - 50% capacity or 2,000 people outdoors and 1,000 people indoors, whichever is the lowest
  • Tier 3 - No events are permitted to run

There is government-approved guidance which venue managers must follow when hosting business meetings, this can be obtained from the Meeting Industry Association. Organisers of larger-scale events must comply with the AEO, AEV, and ESSA's All Secure Standard.

Mr Johnson closed by expressing his hopes that those testing negative to Covid-19 can return to more normal day-to-day lives, and underlined his plans for rapid mass testing in the UK.
