2016 was a record year for apprentice recruitment at AFI – 28 young people began their careers with the company, working in roles throughout the business. The new record beat the previous high set by AFI in 2015 when it recruited 26 apprentices.
Two of the latest recruits to join AFI are Karl Davies (left) and Luke Thomas (right), who are apprentice hire desk controllers working at the company’s Caldicot andPreston depots respectively.
AFI has enrolled them onto the Hire Association of Europe’s Hire Desk Operative (HDO) two-year apprenticeship programme which provides accredited training for new entrants to hire desk operations.
AFI HR Training Manager Mark Jones said: “The HDO programme is a fantastic scheme that provides our hire desk apprentices with an industry recognised qualification. The scheme not only teaches our apprentices the importance of product differentiation between the different price points, features and benefits but it also extensively covers customer service training, with specific modules covering complaints handling, offering a great service, and customer dispute resolution. These particular elements fit in extremely well with AFI’s values.”
The Hire Desk Operative apprenticeship scheme is managed by Richard Whiting, Commercial Manager, Hire Association Europe who said: "We have just started our eighth intake of apprentices and the scheme continues to go from strength to strength. I'm delighted that AFI has recognised the benefits associated with the scheme and continue to register apprentices with us on each intake. Completing this course has often led to apprentices rising quickly within their organisations and becoming supervisors and managers in a short space of time, further evidencing what a good grounding for a career in hire the apprenticeship offers. In total 25 apprentices have completed the scheme, with another 41 still in training, including 5 from AFI. I'd like to thank AFI for their ongoing support and look forward to welcoming more AFI apprentices on future intakes."
