A HAE EHA member based in the South West has been in touch to report a story relating to card payment fraud, as a warning to other members.
The company was contacted by a person calling himself Andrew Harris, claiming to be from Harris & Harris Limited, enquiring about the supply of power tools for a new site in Salcombe.
Not being a regular customer, payment was taken up front using a debit card which was processed and accepted using the security checks required. A second call was made by this person and another order was placed, using a different payment card which, again, was processed without a problem and the goods were collected.
The card processing company then contacted the hire company to inform them that the first transaction was fraudulent, then a short while later it was discovered that the second transaction was also fraudulent, potentially made on stolen payment cards.
All in all, this crime has cost the hire company around £13,000! The police have been informed and the investigation is on-going with assistance from CCTV footage.
If Andrew Harris, or any representatives from Harris & Harris Limited make contact with you please act with caution and don't release any equipment until you are certain you have approved funds in the bank. Also report any suspicious activity to your local police.
